You ever get that feeling that you just have so much you want to do but you don’t know where to start?
That happens to me on rainy days. It’s the perfect day to do some stuff, but what should I do? What will be the most effective? And why is it that I feel depressed if I stay in the house all day?
So many questions, answered by one logical solution: you’ve got to still your mind in order to do anything of value.
It seems so insignificant, but the reason why a still, focused mind is the ultimate power in life, is that it takes your attention (which is essentially all that you really are) and puts it somewhere besides your chattering brain.
You see, as Eckhart Tolle relates in his book, “The Power of Now”, the brain-ego is “dysfunctional” and has usurped your attention into thinking that attention is the brain-ego.
So the beauty of stilling the brain-ego, is that you suddenly have an “A-ha!” moment where you realize that the brain-ego is not you, because if the brain is still, and you remain attentive, then you must be separate from the brain.
That is why we feel “imprisoned” by thoughts, and we feel “free” when we have a carefree day, where we don’t really think too much.
Okay, so the practical aspect of today is this: when you are in the house, home on a rainy day with a lot of free time on your hands, or if you feel boredom, or restlessness anytime, here’s what you can do:
1. Sit down on the couch and count 10 breaths in and out of your abdomen.
2. At the end of ten breaths, say to yourself, “I am here, I am relaxed, and I am at peace” and count ten more breaths.
3. Now say, “I devote this day to deepening my peace, and I ask peace to tell me what is the best action for me to do today.” Pay attention to your breath until you have clarity on what to do. It might take a couple minutes, so just be quiet and patient.
Pretty simple! Let me know how it goes for you!
