AREZZO, ITALY — Finally, after nearly two years of physical theatre training and rehearsals in Italy, opening night came and went Monday for Hollywood Happiness Actor-in-Chief, Sean A. Mulvihill. His newest creation: the solo storytelling show, I Promise I’ll Be Good.
In this high-octane re-telling, a naive young man’s prayer to the Gods is stolen by aliens who clone his girlfriend and trick him into stealing a baby for them. Actor-storyteller Sean A. Mulvihill embodies numerous characters and creates lush and detailed environments using just his voice and body.
The show is introduced by Mulvihill as a “true” story that was told to him over tea by an elderly couple who were still in love, and they recounted this particular story to help Sean unlock the secrets of what it means to be truly devoted to another person.
In preparation for the creation–at the Accademia dell’Arte in Arezzo, Italy–the performer studied storytelling and acting for nearly two years. The training included physical and vocal training disciplines such as clown, mime, Roy Hart voice work, Laban movement work, and contact improv, which allowed the training in story creation to reach an audience in a highly stylized form. Sean also studied acrobatics with Flic Circus School in Torino, Italy in preparation.
He plans to take the show on tour to storytelling and theatre festivals worldwide in 2016, but first he’ll seek more mentor feedback to help him gauge how to further enhance the audience’s experience.
